This post may or may not go over well for all the die-hard coconut oil lovers out there but as an esthetician that specializes in acne-prone skin, I have to talk about the downside of using this oil on the skin.⠀Coconut Oil
.⠀⠀⠀
While coconut oil has great anti-microbial activity, it is also unfortunately HIGHLY comedogenic, aka pore-clogging for those of us that are acne-prone.⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀
Those of us with acne have pores that function very differently than those without acne. ⠀⠀
.⠀⠀
Our pores are very much prone to clogging because they are genetically programmed to create an overabundance of dead skin cells. ⠀⠀
.⠀⠀
These cells clump together and create a clog in the pore. ⠀⠀
.⠀⠀
Adding a comedogenic oil like coconut oil on top of this dead skin cell buildup will only skyrocket your acne’s severity. So you can go from mild-moderate breakouts to severe 😩⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀
There is some good news though! ⠀⠀
.⠀⠀
You are free to enjoy eating as much coconut oil as you like!⠀⠀
.⠀ ⠀
It only affects acne negatively when used topically on the skin, but consuming it is no problem. ⠀⠀
.⠀⠀
In my kitchen, I have several jars of it as I love to cook with coconut oil, but you’ll never catch me slathering it on my skin.⠀⠀
.⠀⠀
🚫 Besides coconut oil, there are other commonly recommended ingredients that are horrible for acneic skin.⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀
If you’d like to know what these other bad ingredients are then click the link to download a free copy of my List of Pore Clogging Ingredients to Avoid. I give this list to all of my clients to ensure that everything they put on their skin is truly acne-safe and free of comedogenic ingredients.
