I have used retinoids for years. I have used so many, from the prescription brands and brands formulated by estheticians. So many of the early prescription brands were so strong and not formulated properly, I couldn’t use them enough to make a difference in my skin. As soon as I moved to formulas by estheticians, I was able to use retinoids as much as every night. Now, I have one formulated so well and gentle but effective, I only use it for anti-aging 3 times a week.
Retinoids are keratolytic (lipid-soluble). Meaning, they penetrate into the pore, past waxy plugs and loosen the sticky glue-like substance (desmosomes) that holds the trapped waxy plugs in place. It’s especially effective with maturation arrest acne and helps with pigmentation.
The smaller the molecule of the Retinoid, the faster it converts to Retinoic Acid, and the faster it works.
With prolonged use, it helps to prevent collagenase when exposed to the sun and increases skin cell proliferation leading to skin thickening. That is why it is wonderful for anti-aging too. Topical vitamin A does so much more than this description, but this is a quick synopsis.
Mandelic Acid Is water-soluble. It works on the surface of the skin and the opening of the pores to help kill bacteria. It’s also a tyrosinase inhibitor and helps to kill folliculitis (Fungal bacteria). When these two products are used together, you will see amazing results in clearing acne and anti-aging at the same time.
