I have ALWAYS used a good antioxidant. I use to pay $150 for one that was good but very drying. Finally, I formulated one that is amazing and not drying. My choice has always been a good topical Vit C.
We’ve all heard about the importance of antioxidants in skincare, but do we know why? Do you know what they are and how they protect us? They are vital to life in general, and without them, we’d be…DEAD! It all boils down to one molecule that is both the proverbial “angel” on one shoulder and the “devil” on the other shoulder. That would be OXYGEN! Oxygen is one of the most abundant elements on earth and without it life as we know it would cease to exist. In our bodies and skin, it plays an important role by converting food into energy and is also an essential co-factor in collagen synthesis. The right amount of oxygen is GOOD, but too much is detrimental. Excess oxygen can increase reactive oxygen species or free radicals. These are essentially a molecule with an unpaired electron at the atomic level. Electrons like to be in pairs to maintain balance. When these free radicals scavenge the body they seek to “steal” an electron from another molecule so they can pair up. This theft causes damage to cells, proteins and DNA mutations at the mitochondria level. This AGES us and increases our likelihood of disease. This is where ANTIOXIDANTS come to the rescue. They are molecules that have EXTRA electrons to donate, in effect neutralizing the free radicals, without becoming destabilized. This helps to prevent and slow down the oxidation and bring homeostasis to the tissue. So look out for these in your skincare products! They come in many forms, with Vitamin C, E, CoQ10, and Resveratrol being some of the more popular and well-known ones. Let’s fight this oxidation and bring health back to the skin! 🤓
