Skincare ingredients change and improve so fast, it can be very hard to keep up with what these ingredients are AND what they do. I will attempt to briefly describe some of the most used ingredients and how they can help your skin. This is Part 1, letters A to F. There will be two more parts, published 1 week apart. Let’s get started.

A

Alpha hydroxy acids ( AHAs)

These chemicals loosen the fluids that bind surface skin cells together, allowing the dead skin to be wiped away. As we age, this glue becomes denser as we age, slowing down the skins natural exfoliation. This slowing process begins somewhere about the age of 27-28. ( GAWD, really?) That is why using these chemicals used be used on a regular basis to remove dead skin from the surface so all your skin care products can work properly. Makeup will look better too.

Amino Acids

These are the building blocks of the proteins that make up collagen and elastin – the building blocks of our skin. Agin, and external factors like the sun, smoking, and poor diet reduces these acids.

Antioxidants

If you want to reduce the effects of free radicals, the unstable molecules that are created in the body by sunlight, smoke, pollution and literally destroy skin cells.  A topical Vit C with peptides helps to support the sun when used daily with sunscreen. I just happen to have a GREAT one. Clients LOVE IT!

Avobenzone

This is a popular sunscreen ingredient used in most CHEMICAL sunscreen. It absorbs UVA rays from the sun. I am not a fan. It breaks done very quickly and must have a LOT of other ingredients used with it so it won’t break down. My skin doesn’t like it at ALL.

B

Benzoyl Peroxide

Awesome, amazing and powerful, this ingredient is amazing for inflamed acne. It is an antiseptic fighter of bacteria, helps soften the skin so the pores can release the dead skin clogging pores and reduce the inflammation that comes with acne. Over the counter, BP is often not formulated properly and leave the skin irritated and dry. I only carry the very BEST BP that is safe and very effective in clearing inflamed acne without causing ANY irritation. Don’t believe what you read on the internet about how BAD BP is. My BP is very different. Go to my website and look at my before and after pictures. These after pictures show beautiful, soft clear skin.

Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA)

Like the AHA’s, this chemical loosens dead skin inside the pores and assists clearing acne. It works like magic when used properly with BP to help clear acne.

Botox

This is a trademark name of botulinum toxin that used by injection to freeze muscles and how the skin looks smoother. Frown lines and wrinkles around the eye can look 100% better for about 3 months after treatment. Beware of “botox” parties. How old is this botox that is discounted? Who is injecting it? (training) Are the needles used over and over again? Be SAFE, people.

C

Caffeine

Often used in products that treat eye puffiness, caffeine removes excess fluids by increasing blood flow. It can also be found in cellulite creams. It offers a temporary tightening effect.

Ceramides

These fats, found in the skin’s natural oil, hold together the skin cells in the epidermis to protect the skin barrier function. Most skin care products will use man-made ceramides.

Cetyl Alcohol

A fatty alcohol that prevents creams and cleansers from separating and gives them a silky feel.

CoffeBerry

Extracted from the Coffea arabica plant, it is a powerful and expensive antioxidant.

Collagen

This protein makes up 80% of the skin and its fibers five the skin firmness and strength. Sadly, over time, starting at the age of 25-27, it naturally begins to break down and your skin loses its firmness and strength. BUT, there is GOOD news. There are some great topical skin care ingredients, like retinol, peptides and physical sunscreen can greatly slow down the break down of collagen. Retinols have been around a long time. I have used the FOREVER. I even studied with one of the co-developer of the first retinol, Dr. Fulton. If you want to protect your skin collagen, used a well formulated, effective and gentle retinol. Guess who has one of the best ever? ME! I love keeping as much collagen as possible in my skin. Clients love it and so do I.

D

Dimethicone

Ever used a skincare product that feels silky on your skin? This form of cosmetic silicone is widely used in cosmetics and skincare. It forms a hydrating barrier on the skin, preventing natural moisture from evaporating. I have a tinted physical sunscreen that has is and I can’t keep it on the shelf. awesome stuff.

Dysport

Similar to Botox, this injectable is a form of botulinum toxin that paralyzes muscles and helps with wrinkles and fine lines. Usually cheaper than Botox. However, you have to use more of it and the cost usually comes out the same as Botox.

E

Elastin

This stretchy structural protein allows the skin to snap back into place. Elastins work with collagen to support skin. If you pinch your skin and it doesn’t snap back, your elastin has aged. the good news is retinol ( professionally formulated) and nano peptides help restore elastin.

Emollient

Another word for a moisturizer. It increases skin water levels.

Emulsifiers

This chemical binds together ingredients in skincare products. Think cetyl alcohol.

F

Fraxel

This is a laser treatment using fractional light to create microscopic injuries to the skin to stimulate the body’s natural wound-healing response, producing…new COLLAGEN. I have had many Fraxel treatments for my acne scars. Expensive. And downtime can be at least a week of red, swollen, dry flaky skin. I prefer micro-needling now for acne scars, surgical scars and fine lines and wrinkles. the texture of my skin and improved 75% and my scars (acne) are so much better. I also use it to keep my collagen and elastin as strong as it can be! downtime is zip, zero. Plus, it doesn’t cost $0000! Under the Anti-aging tab on my website, you can find more info about this micro-needling treatment.

Free Radicals

These bad, bad molecules reek havoc in the skin. These a very unstable molecules created in the skin and body by sunlight, smoke, and pollution. They attach on to and damage cells. they leave the skin rough, sagging ( collagen and elastin damage) and wrinkled skin. The good news? A good sunscreen and antioxidant products and reduce their nasty effects.
